A Multilingual Education

At EtonHouse International School Bangkok, children learn in and through English, Thai and Mandarin. Together, these three languages form the trilingual experience at the heart of school life.
We believe learners pick up languages naturally when they are constantly being exposed to them. Language learning is therefore immersive, relational and joyful. Learners listen, play, inquire, tell stories, make friends, and express their ideas, gradually building confidence through a range of experiences and opportunities.
Cultural immersion is integral to this process. Through literature, music, creative arts, celebrations, traditions and encounters with people and places, children discover the culture behind each language. They learn not only what words mean, but how language helps people connect, belong and understand one another.
Thai and Mandarin are delivered by specialist educators, as are our additional programmes in Japanese and English as an Additional Language. Their expertise allows every child to be supported and challenged from their own starting point.

Learning Through Three Languages

Children experience each language through purposeful interaction rather than memorisation alone. Every conversation, story, inquiry and shared experience gives them opportunities to listen, respond and communicate.

English

English is the primary language of instruction at EtonHouse Bangkok and is woven naturally through learning across the school day. Learners hear and use it as they play, investigate questions, conduct research and work with others. They communicate their thinking through conversation, writing, storytelling, presentations, performance and digital media.
As an international language, English allows children to access ideas from around the world and communicate with people from different backgrounds. Stories and literature introduce different voices, places and experiences, while inquiries give children something meaningful to discuss.

Thai ไทย

Thai helps children develop a genuine relationship with the country and community they call home. Rather than being taught solely as a subject, it is experienced as a living language woven into everyday life.
Our international curriculum is thoughtfully contextualised and enriched through Thai literature, traditions, celebrations, creative arts, history and ways of life. Thai books, artefacts and cultural references are found throughout the school, making the country’s rich heritage a natural part of children’s daily experience. Building on this culturally rich environment, specialist educators create joyful opportunities for children to listen, speak and communicate in Thai through conversations, stories, music, movement, play and shared experiences.

Mandarin 华文

Mandarin introduces learners to one of the world’s most widely spoken languages and the rich diversity of Chinese cultures. Through rich and varied experiences, learners develop practical language skills and cultural understanding.
Learners will encounter Mandarin in contexts that invite them to listen, respond, experiment with sounds and express experiences and ideas. As their confidence grows, Learners build age-appropriate foundations in Chinese character recognition, reading and writing.
Stories, calligraphy, drama and contemporary cultural references offer further opportunities to explore how Mandarin is used across different contexts. Connections across the EtonHouse network can also extend these encounters through exchanges with Mandarin-speaking peers.

Additional Language Pathways

Our additional pathways welcome both native and non-native learners. Specialist educators adapt the experience to children’s existing knowledge, giving every learner an appropriate starting point from which to grow.

Japanese 日本語

For Japanese families living in Bangkok, our Japanese programme helps children remain connected to their native language, cultural identity, and family relationships. For non-native learners, it offers a joyful introduction to another important Asian language and culture.
Led by a specialist educator, sessions are tailored and respond to children’s different levels of experience. Native speakers can continue to develop confidence and depth in the language, while beginners build a foundation through conversation, stories, music, games and more. Whether Japanese is part of a child’s heritage or entirely new to them, the programme creates a meaningful relationship with both the language and its culture.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Our EAL programme is led by a specialist EAL educator and provides additional support for learners as they develop their English proficiency. Support is responsive to each child’s stage of English language development and individual learning styles and may take place individually, in small groups or within the classroom.
Through meaningful encounters with spoken and written English, children strengthen their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Learning is connected to classroom inquiries and everyday school experiences, creating opportunities to use new language immediately and with purpose.
